Getting started

Add Orpheus to your server, play your first song and find your way around the player card.

Orpheus is a free Discord music bot: every song plays for everyone, in every server. This page gets it into your server and playing.

Add Orpheus

Press Add to Discord and pick your server. You need Manage Server there, which Discord asks of any bot. If you haven't added a bot before, how to add a music bot to Discord walks through each screen.

It asks only for the permissions below, and never Administrator or Manage Messages.

Permission What it's for
View Channels, Send Messages, Embed Links Posting the player card and replying to commands
Read Message History Keeping the player card at the bottom of the chat
Connect, Speak, Use Voice Activity Joining your voice channel and playing
Set Voice Channel Status Showing the song under the voice channel's name
Attach Files Images on the player card, such as the progress bar
Use External Emojis The icons on the player card's buttons
Send Messages in Threads Using commands in threads
Manage Webhooks Only if you turn on update announcements in /admin setup

Play your first song

  1. Join a voice channel.
  2. Type /play and a song name or link, for example /play query: sky high elektronomia.
  3. Orpheus joins your channel and starts playing.

The player card appears in the channel where you ran the command. If something is already playing, a short note says where your song landed in the queue.

The player card

The card shows the song, who added it, the queue length, the volume, the loop mode and a progress bar. Songs Orpheus picked itself say "Autoplay" or name the radio station instead of a person. When chat pushes the card out of view, Orpheus posts it again at the bottom.

  • Like adds the song to your liked songs, and radio and autoplay pick it more often on this server.
  • Save adds the song to one of your playlists.
  • Previous, Pause, Skip and Stop. Stop clears the queue and leaves the channel.
  • Autoplay turns autoplay on or off. It's blue while it's on.
  • Queue shows you what's coming up. Only you see it.
  • Shuffle, and Loop, which cycles through off, this song and the whole queue.
  • Not for me blocks the song on this server and skips it. See likes and blocks.
  • Dashboard opens this server on the website.

Most buttons need you in the voice channel with Orpheus, and a server can limit some of them to a DJ role or put skips to a vote. Who can control playback has the rules.

If you lose the card, /nowplaying gives you your own copy with working buttons.

Replies only you see

Lookups stay private so they don't fill the channel: /queue view, /nowplaying, /lyrics, /search, /help, /liked list, /playlist list, and any settings command you run without options. Short confirmations like "Skipped" clear themselves. Errors stay longer.
