What's new in Orpheus

The changes you’d notice in your server or on the dashboard, newest first. If something here isn’t behaving the way it says, tell us on the support page. Every release is also posted in #changelog in the Orpheus Discord as it goes out.

  1. v1.4.1

Fewer songs that fail, and music that stays paused when nobody is listening

    • 2 new
    • 2 improved
    • 4 fixed

Orpheus 1.4.1 fixes what members ran into after 1.4.0. Fewer songs fail to start or play a different version, 24/7 rooms stay paused when they are empty, and Spotify playlists and live radio work properly again.

    New2

    • Radio suggestions that play

Leave the search box empty in /radio live and Orpheus suggests popular stations. Every suggestion is checked to make sure it is actually playing, and stations that stop working drop out of the list.

    • Maintenance countdown on the player

Before planned maintenance, the player shows a small line with a countdown and when music should be back.

    Improved2

    • Smoother updates

When Orpheus restarts for an update, songs come back steadily instead of all at once, so fewer of them fail on the way back.

    • A clearer status page

The status page now separates songs that failed from songs that played a different version, follows the last few minutes rather than the last hour, and keeps its history back to 12 September.

    Fixed4

    • Fewer songs that fail to start

Orpheus now checks the exact stream it is about to play and tries another route when one is refused, so far fewer songs fail or fall back to a different version.

    • Empty 24/7 rooms stay paused

After an update or restart, a 24/7 channel with nobody in it stays paused instead of playing to an empty room. Music carries on when someone comes back and uses /resume.

    • Find my Spotify playlists

The dashboard can find your Spotify playlists again, and Spotify links start faster.

    • Lyrics on every server

Lyrics for Spotify songs load on every server again.

  2. v1.4.0

More room to play, songs that start, and links from more places

    • 9 new
    • 10 improved
    • 4 changed
    • 9 fixed

Orpheus 1.4.0 makes playback more reliable and gives you more ways to find and listen to music. Songs start faster, queues recover more reliably, and more music services are supported. Autoplay and radio are working again, while the command system and dashboard have been simplified. Discord can take up to an hour to show the new commands.

    New9

    • Vote-skip

Servers can now enable vote-skip from /admin setup or the dashboard.

Choose what percentage of the people in the voice channel need to vote before the current song is skipped. Members with Manage Server, DJs and the person who queued the song can still skip without a vote.

    • Server charts

/server charts shows the most-played songs in your server each week.

You can also have the previous week's chart posted automatically to a channel every Monday.

    • Server Rewind

/server rewind gives your server a monthly look at its listening habits, including songs played, hours listened and its top artist.

Rewind is available to every server.

    • Personalised suggestions

Leave the song field empty when using /play and Orpheus can suggest music based on your listening history.

Suggestions include recently played songs, favourites, frequently played artists and popular music from your server.

    • Live radio

/radio live lets you search and play internet radio stations by name, genre, country or language.

    • Taste Match

/me taste lets you compare your music taste with another user.

Both users need to enable Taste Match in their privacy settings first.

    • Playlist syncing

Spotify playlists imported into Orpheus can now be synced with their current contents.

The dashboard can also find your public Spotify playlists and import them for you.

Long playlists are now handled more reliably as well.

    • Playlist export

/playlist export can export a playlist as a list of Spotify links.

    Improved10

    • More reliable playback

Songs are now more likely to start successfully, even when the first available source cannot be played.

Orpheus is also better at avoiding preview-only tracks and finding a full version when one is available.

    • Faster song starts

Recently played songs can now start faster, while new searches have been streamlined to reduce unnecessary lookups.

    • Better song matching

Orpheus is now more careful when matching a song by name.

Different versions such as club mixes, extended mixes and edits are less likely to be returned when you asked for the original track. Titles written in different alphabets are also matched more accurately.

    • Autoplay and radio

Autoplay and several radio stations are working again after changes to the services Orpheus uses to find music.

    • More reliable queues

Queues are now restored more reliably after restarts and connection problems.

Queue loops are also preserved, and a queue can be recovered with /resume when playback cannot immediately continue.

    • Better playback status

Orpheus now reports a song as playing once playback has actually started.

This also reduces duplicate and misleading status messages when songs are queued or replaced.

    • Improved 8D

The 8D effect now includes a subtle room effect to make the sound feel more natural.

    • Dashboard

The dashboard has been made faster and more responsive.

The player can now seek through songs, reorder the queue and apply effects. Search results also include recently played and liked songs.

    • Privacy

/me privacy and the dashboard now give you more control over how your listening activity appears.

Ghost Mode can hide your name from charts and rankings while your plays continue to count.

    • Status

The status page now shows the health of music playback, commands and the dashboard, along with historical information from the previous 90 days.

The same information is available in #status in the Orpheus Discord.

    Changed4

    • A simpler command system

Orpheus now has fewer commands, with related features grouped together.

Server settings are available under /admin, queue controls under /queue, radio features under /radio, and personal settings under /me.

/help has also been redesigned to make commands easier to find, with categories and links to the relevant guides.

    • /play and /resume

/play now requires a song or link.

If you want to continue an existing queue, use /resume.

    • Now-playing text

The song title shown under the voice channel can now be disabled from /admin setup or the dashboard.

Titles containing explicit or inappropriate terms are also replaced with a generic now-playing message.

    • Lyrics

Lyrics are now provided through LRCLIB and credited directly in the lyrics panel.

    Fixed9

    • Songs that previously stopped after a short preview can now fall back to a full version when available.

    • Some songs that failed to play now receive an additional attempt from another source.

    • Songs recovering after a restart no longer appear as "Unknown title".

    • Skipped songs no longer incorrectly trigger playback failure messages.

    • "Queue finished" no longer appears while Orpheus is still finding a replacement for a failed song.

    • Pasted links in /play are handled more reliably.

    • Long Amazon Music links now appear correctly in the /play menu.

    • Orpheus now refuses voice channels it cannot access instead of waiting for the connection to fail.

    • Queue and player state are handled more reliably during restarts and reconnects.

    More improvements

This release also includes smaller improvements across the dashboard, Discord commands, playlists, playback, permissions, status reporting and the Orpheus website.

The goal of 1.4.0 is simple: make Orpheus more reliable, easier to use, and better at getting music playing.

    • 1 changed
    • 3 fixed

    New3

    • When you add Orpheus to a server, it posts a short message on how to get started.

    • Orpheus has its own Discord server, with a lofi station that plays around the clock, live status, and every update as it goes out.

    Improved1

    • After an update, music comes back sooner, and Orpheus no longer tries to rejoin a channel it isn't allowed into.

    Changed1

    • Apple Music links aren't supported, and Orpheus now says so.

    • 3 new
    • 3 improved
    • 1 changed
    • 1 fixed

    New3

    • /radio station on its own opens a menu only you can see. Pick a kind of station, then a station, with Next and Previous for the longer lists.

    • More stations to pick from: moods like Focus and Late night, scenes like Phonk, Drill and Amapiano, every decade from the 60s to the 2020s, and Deezer's top 100 worldwide or for one of 24 countries.

    • "From what's playing" builds a station around the artist of the song on now.

    Improved3

    • The station box of /radio station suggests stations as you type, so "dnb" finds Drum and bass. Anything else you type still works.

    • The dashboard's Radio page lists every station by kind, with a box to search them all.

    • Autoplay follows what people asked for most recently.

    Changed1

    • Orpheus's status in Discord points to /play and orpheusbot.app, and takes turns with how many servers it's in and how many songs it has played.

    Fixed1

    • Replies say "1 track" where they used to say "1 track(s)".

  12. Save and export playlists, and autoplay that follows the room

    New5

    • A Save button on the player card and on the dashboard's player puts the song playing into one of your playlists, or into a new one you name there.

    • /playlist add saves the song playing to a playlist by name. A name you don't have yet makes a new playlist.

    • /playlist export and the Export menu on the dashboard's playlists download a playlist as CSV for transfer sites, as plain text or as M3U links.

    • The dashboard's player has a volume slider.

    • A new orpheusbot.app with features, a comparison with other bots, full docs, every command, and this changelog.

    Improved5

    • When the dashboard can't do what you pressed, it tells you why.

    • Autoplay carries on from the artists behind the last five songs people asked for instead of only the last one, keeps to their genres, and mixes artists so one doesn't take over.

    • Statistics group songs under the right artist.

    • In Discord's command picker, /dislike says it stops radio and autoplay picking a song, and /play lists the links it can play.

    • A redesigned status page.

    Changed1

    • Filters switch off when the queue finishes, and after three hours on. /filter turns them back on.

  13. See who queued what, and lyrics on the dashboard

    • 6 new
    • 1 improved
    • 1 fixed

    New6

    • Every track says where it came from. The player card and the dashboard show who added it, or which radio station or autoplay picked it.

    • The dashboard's player shows the cover, album and release year when Orpheus can match the song to a release, and a Lyrics tab that scrolls along with the song when the lyrics have timings.

    • Anyone in the voice channel can skip and add songs from the dashboard, following the same DJ role rules as the buttons in Discord.

    • /liked remove takes a song off your liked list. Liking a song again moves it back to the top, and /liked play skips artists your server has blocked.

    • When Orpheus leaves an empty channel it keeps the queue for a day, and the next /play in that server offers to bring it back. Turning 24/7 off keeps the queue too.

    • orpheusbot.app/invite takes you straight to adding Orpheus to a server.

    Improved1

    • Imports tell you when they stop short and why, and saving a playlist tells you why it left tracks out.

    Fixed1

    • Likes and blocks are saved under the artist's name, so "Not this artist" blocks the artist you meant.

  14. A new dashboard

    • 1 new
    • 2 improved

    New1

    • 2 new
    • 1 improved
    • 1 fixed

    • Orpheus can split a playlist too long for one import across several of your playlists.

    Improved1

    • Theme stations like phonk or summer are built from playlists that are about that theme.

    Fixed1

    • Music now carries on after an update.

  16. Fewer songs that won't play

    • Radio understands a genre even when it's spelled a little differently.

    • Imports say how many tracks they can bring in.

    Changed1

    • Apple Music came off the list of sources, because its links don't play. If you import an Apple Music playlist, Orpheus tells you it isn't supported.

  18. Who can skip

    • 1 new
    • 2 improved
    • 2 changed

    New1

    • Everyone can sign in to the dashboard. Servers you listen in are shown read-only next to the ones you manage.

    Improved2

    • When something is wrong on our side, commands tell you straight away instead of failing quietly.

    • More radio stations to choose from, and /play suggestions say so when they can't load.

    Changed2

    • Anyone in the voice channel can skip, and a DJ role limits that to the people you choose.

    • The invite no longer asks for Manage Messages. Orpheus only ever deletes its own messages, which doesn't need it.

  19. The website and the dashboard

    • 3 new

orpheusbot.app went up, with a dashboard where you sign in with Discord to see what's playing, manage the queue, start radio, look at your server's statistics and change its settings.

    New3

    • The player card has a Dashboard button that opens your server's page.

    • People with Manage Server can change the server's settings.

    • Radio stations can start from a theme like phonk, 2000s or summer.

    • By this point Orpheus already had /play with Spotify and SoundCloud links, radio with likes and blocks, 24/7, lyrics, filters, saved playlists, /search and skipping sponsor segments.
